About
HCL is a colorless to light-yellowish liquid with a pungent, irritating odor. It is a strong acid because it dissociates completely in water.
* Chemical Formula: HCl (Hydrogen Chloride dissolved in water)
* Common Applications:
* Pickling of Steel: Removing rust or iron oxide scale from iron or steel.
* Chemical Production: Manufacturing vinyl chloride for PVC plastic and polyurethane.
* PH Control: Neutralizing alkaline waste streams or adjusting the acidity of swimming pools.
* Household Cleaning: Often used in diluted forms for heavy-duty bathroom or masonry cleaning.
Safety
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
* Eyes: Wear chemical splash goggles or a full-face shield.
* Skin: Use acid-resistant gloves (Nitrile or Neoprene) and a laboratory coat or chemical apron.
* Respiratory: If working in poorly ventilated areas, use a respirator with an acid gas cartridge to avoid inhaling toxic fumes.
* First Aid:
* Inhalation: Move to fresh air immediately.
* Skin/Eye Contact: Flush with water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.
* Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. Rinse the mouth and seek emergency medical help.
Storage
Container Material: Store in original containers or high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic. Avoid metal containers, as HCl reacts with metal to produce highly flammable hydrogen gas.
* Environment: Keep in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight.
* Incompatibility: * Keep away from Bases: Mixing with strong bases (like Sodium Hydroxide) causes a violent exothermic reaction.
* Keep away from Oxidizers: Mixing with bleach (Sodium Hypochlorite) releases deadly chlorine gas.
* Containment: Use secondary containment (like a plastic tray or bunding) to catch any potential leaks or spills.
