• Chemical Name: Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl)
• Appearance: Pale greenish-yellow liquid with a distinct, pungent odor.
• Active Ingredient: Usually sold in concentrations ranging from 5% (household grade) to 10-15%(industrial/commercial grade).
• Primary Uses: Removing stains from white fabrics, disinfecting surfaces, and treating water in swimming pools or industrial cooling systems.
Safety
Liquid bleach is corrosive and can cause significant irritation or chemical burns if mishandled.
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear rubber gloves, safety goggles, and protective clothing. Skin contact can lead to dermatitis or burns.
• Ventilation: Use only in well-ventilated areas. Inhaling the fumes can irritate the respiratory tract and cause coughing or shortness of breath.
• First Aid:
• Skin/Eyes: Flush immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes.
• Inhalation: Move to fresh air immediately.
• Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. Drink milk or water and seek medical attention immediately.
Storage
• Temperature Control: Store in a cool, dry place. Heat significantly accelerates the decomposition of the chemical.
• Light Protection: Use opaque containers (usually high-density polyethylene). Exposure to UV light/sunlight breaks down the active chlorine quickly.
• Ventilation: Ensure the storage area is vented. Bleach can release small amounts of gas that may build up pressure in a completely sealed environment.
• Separation: Keep away from flammable materials, fuels, and organic compounds.
• Shelf Life: Even under ideal conditions, industrial-strength hypo loses about 1% of its strength per month. It is best to use "first-in, first-out" inventory management.
